Class 1 - Superheroes!

Hello! From the SUPERHEROES.

Class 1 has its own 'special' name - The 'Superheroes', because we can do absolutely anything!

Uniform

Just a reminder about our school uniform:

Our school uniform

  • Grey trousers or skirts, girls may wear trousers
  • Plain white polo shirt
  • School sweatshirt or white cardigan for girls in summer
  • Black shoes with buckles or Velcro fastening  that can be managed independently
  • Black plimsolls in a named bag
  • PE kit – black shorts and white T shirt

Other items

  • Coat – we have Outdoor Learning every day, what ever the weather so it is vital that each child has a coat in school
  • Wellies – for Outdoor Learning
  • Hat and gloves for winter and a cap or sun hat during the summer
  • Children are encouraged to drink water throughout the day and will need a small named container

Please ensure that every item is clearly named.

We will be using the entrance in the Outdoor Learning Area to enter and leave school. Children will be allowed into school at 8.50am and school finishes at 3.30pm. Children who are in school for half days will finish at 12.00 midday.

Our theme for the next few weeks will be Food Fun.

We will be reading information books about the sea and using the Internet for research. We will be reading poems and stories and finding out what was Handa’s Surprise and reading what happens to a hungry caterpillar

We will be creating landscapes based on the story of Handa. Investigating how things grow and discussing which foods help to keep us healthy. We will be making and tasting some healthy foods. In Geography we’ll take a look at food from around the world. Also, we are going to study the history of Cadbury’s Chocolate, not such a healthy option, but a delicious treat. In Music we will be learning songs and investigating rhythm patterns, again based on the story of Handa. In RE we will be thinking about what we can learn from the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

This is an expensive topic to resource and we would appreciate it if you could contribute £1.

If you have any information, know of any useful websites or have any relevant resources that you think may be of use to us; please let either Mrs. Barwick or Mrs. Ward know. Thank you.

OUTDOORS

This is our outdoor christmas tree!

Outdoor learning area

Learning in Class 1 takes place both inside and out, so please make sure your child always has ‘Outdoor clothes.’  (A waterproof coat, wellies and hats are often necessary in chilly Thurlstone, even in summer!)

Who's Who...

The children in Class 1 are very lucky to have the support and guidance of five members of staff.  Their teacher is Mrs. Glynis Barwick and on Thursday mornings, Mrs. Debbie Ward. The children are also supported by Teaching Assistants Mrs. Carole Penistone, Mrs. Helen Smeaton (mornings only) and Mrs. Claire Wood (afternoons only) who all have many years experience working in schools

Golden Time

Buzz Lightyear toyAs part of our ongoing commitment to encouraging positive attitudes and behaviour in school we have introduced, 'Golden Time.'

This will now be in a different format. Children will be able to sign up for a variety of exciting ‘Golden Time ‘activities. These will be a range of craft and sport activities.

Minutes of ‘Golden Time can be deducted for inappropriate behaviour; the children seem to respond well to it and certainly enjoy it.  We think that the fact that minutes are rarely deducted is proof that the strategy is effective.

Class 1's pet

Class 1's Pet - Tigger!

You have written and drawn so many wonderful things in Tigger's diary that we have had to get a new one. Thank you for all your contributions. The children thoroughly enjoy sharing their 'Tigger-time' with their friends.

Tigger is our class pet. He watches the children each day and then chooses someone he would like to go home with for the evening, weekend or even holiday! He only chooses children who have behaved really well all day, week or term. Another Tigger picture

He likes to join in with whatever the family do and then asks that you let us know what you've done with him the next day. Maybe you could even send us an email and /or some digital photos. If you take him on holiday, you could even send us a postcard.

Tigger will be watching the children particularly carefully this half term in order that he can decide who he would like to spend the whole easter holiday with.

Special mentions assembly

Smiley faceEach Friday the theme for the school assembly is, 'Special Mentions.' This is where we let the rest of the school know about children who deserve a special mention that week.

Special Mentions can be for anything from good manners, trying hard, high attendance, looking after people and possessions, to tidying up well.

Sometimes we mention one child, sometimes groups of children.

Ask your child if they have been mentioned in the 'Special Mentions Assembly' recently or come in to the class and browse through our 'Special Mentions Book.'
