Thurlstone Primary School: Community

About Thurlstone Primary School

Please click the headings below to reveal more information.

T.A.G is a hardworking group of parents and friends of Thurlstone Primary School - otherwise known as the PTA. They work together to support the school in its fundraising endeavours and Enterprise Projects. T.A.G are also great at organising community based social events.

If you would like to get involved, contact Mrs Gibbins for more details. There are regular meetings, all of which are advertised in the school's newsletter The Shuttle.

We are very proud of our community allotment! Situated on the school field, and funded by an Awards for All grant, the allotment is used by many within the Thurlstone community; from pupils to parents; grandparents to grammar school pupils!

The allotment group have worked hard to plan and develop the allotments on the school field and are now enjoying their 2nd harvest of fruit and vegetables.

The aim is to supply the school kitchen, and allotment group members, with fresh, home-grown fruit and vegetables whilst providing hands-on opportunities for children to learn about growing, nature and responsible animal husbandry. It is also the intension to provide group members with the opportunity to be at the heart of a supportive, productive, enthusiastic and ‘green’ collaborative.

We have a poly-tunnel; shed with assorted equipment for both children and adults; easily assessable water and electricity supplies, as well as enclosures for chickens.

THE HENS

Yes we have our own hens! There are six of them; one for each class, one for the staff and one for Daisy Chains!

Each class has named their hen and they're producing lots of lovely eggs! You can buy them for £1 for half a dozen - see a member of staff if you'd like some!

Feel free to pop up and visit them but come to reception first so we know who's here!

Thurlstone Village Community Group meet regularly in the school's Community Room.

They meet to socialise and discuss local issues and do some really fantastic work that has benefited the whole village community.

If you would like to know more, get in touch with school and we will pass your name to Mrs Tracy Yates; the groups founder and secretary.

Following the recent changes to the hall block the school can now offer a room that can be booked and used by a variety of groups in the local community.

Events such such family learning activities, SureStart coffees mornings and Thurlstone village community Group meetings/events are held here on a regular basis.

Please contact school if you'd like to make use of this facility.

Daisy Chains, run by the very lovely Elaine Padgett, is situated in the basement of the site opposite the main school and offers excellent preschool education and breakfast and after-school clubs in afantastic, newly renovated setting!

St Saviours Church, just up the road, is where we celebrate Harvest and other festivals throughout the year.

Local landlords are very supportive when organising local community and school-based events. In in the past they have contributed the use of marquees and allowed us to use their premises for PTA events; they have also supplied football kit and raised money towards the playground Pal Perch.

We need your help!

Your recipes for healthy lunch box pasta meals would be much appreciated. Just jot them down and hand them to your child's class teacher (or email us!). They will be then available to all on the Healthy Schools page.

We're on the look out for parents, grandparents etc, who have interesting skills which they would be willing to share in some way here at Thurlstone.

Perhaps you're a dab-hand at gardening? Or perhaps you can play a musical instrument? Or you're even an artist?

Please let us know if you'd be willing to spare some time with the children in order to pass on your skills!

We aim to promote positive citizenship, therefore we would like to invite the wisdom of people who contribute to society through their profession or interests. Perhaps you work with needy animals or the elderly. Perhaps you do voluntary work, or work in the caring professions. We'd like you to come in and share your experiences with the children and answer their questions. If you think you could, please get in touch.

The children would benefit so much.
