Thurlstone Primary: Healthy Schools

Bits and pieces we can't fit on other pages!

Please click the headings below to reveal more information.

In order to improve school to home communication we have introduced a texting service which enables us to let you know important information at the click of a button.

We need to keep mobile numbers up to date, so please visit the school office if you've got new contact details.

This term we have also introduced an email to parents service. We aim to send important letters and The Shuttle via email so we can do our bit for the environment and save money on paper and printing inks!

Money saved will of course be spent on the most important people of all - the children!

Wow WordsThis is something special that we do here at Thurlstone Primary school.

Big Writing is an extremely focused and creative approach to writing - it takes the form of a double lesson writing workshop where the children learn about the four areas of writing which are the key factors of good quality writing - these are know as V.C.O.P or VOCABULARY, CONNECTIVES, sentence OPENERS and PUNCTUATION.

The children are expected, at the end of each workshop, to work for 45 minutes to produce a piece of writing - during this 45 minutes the children are provided with special writing pens or pencils, special paper and healthy snacks. They also have gentle music playing - Mozart is particularly conducive to good concentration.

Big WritingAll classes have the same type of Big writing displays - showing that we are consistent in our approach.

Wow! Words are words that literally make you say ' WOW THAT'S A GOOD ONE!'

There's lots more to know about Big Writing so please feel free to pop in and have a look at the class displays and ask any questions you may have.

We do lots and lots to reward the good work and behaviour of our pupils. We believe children should be rewarded for their individual efforts as well as team work.

Thurlstone Team Challenge provides the children with opportunities to collect silver team points for their team - the team with the most points each half term earn the chance to their very own non-uniform day. Double point are available in the form of Golden team points which are special and are only awarded for extra effort and exceptional behaviour.

'Chances' provide children with the opportunity to win treats from the headteacher's Treasure Box for good work and behaviour.

All children are entitled to 30 minutes Golden Time each week. During Golden Time, children participate in special activites which they sign up for on a half termly basis.

In Friday's 'Special Mentions' assembly we now have a new feature!! Not only do we celebrate success in the classroom, but we now reward the pupils for showing caring, kind and sensitive behaviours and attitudes. One child is picked from each class each week - they are then photographed in the Mary Brailsford chair. The photos are then displayed in the hall for all to see. Please feel free to come and see the special chair and the fab display!
