Thurlstone Primary School - News & Events

Friendship Week

Friendship Week was from Monday 29th March to Thursday 1st April and was a great success; particulary the concert!

Here's some photos of our Team workshop sessions! The children spent the morning in their teams working together to develop team skills. The kids had a fab time and it was lovely to see the older children working with and supporting our youngest!

Thanks to those of you who filled in one of the Friendship slips for our display!

Thurlstone Hens

Yes we have our own hens now! There are five of them; one for each class and one for the staff! Each class have named their hen and they've already produced some eggs!

Feel free to pop up and visit them but come to reception first so we know who's here!

Not our actual hens but there'll be photos coming soon, so watch this space!

Carol Singing Event

What a success!

About 100 people of all ages turned up and had a great time singing their hearts out. Local villagers were happy to come and outside to enjoy the festivities and many donated money to the school. Refreshments warmed us up on return to school and the family quiz got us all thinking!

We hope you enjoyed this great community event!

Thanks to T.A.G for organising the event and to all of you who have donated raffle prizes!

YOUNG VOICES 2009

Can't believe how quickly it comes around each year! We're off again on 26th November so please can you make sure your child's permission slip is signed and returned?

Thanks to Lynnsey and Stuart Rowe, Nakomi's parents, we've got a fantastic Thurlstone Primary banner! One for pupils and one for parents so we can easily spot each other!

School Uniform Recycle Scheme

Do you have any old school sweat shirts or fleeces that you don't need any more?

If so, please can we have them? We would like to do our bit for the credit crunch and offer quality second hand uniform at discount prices!

If you are able to donate, please bring your unwanted uniform items to the school office.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE ALREADY DONATED!

CAN YOU HELP?

Do you have a bit of spare time on your hands? If so, we could really do with some help in our Nature Garden, which has become really overgrown over the summer!

Please get in touch with Mrs Gibbins if you are able to help! Thanks!

The Shuttle: putting news at the heart of the community!

The Shuttle now has a section called The Weekly Whisper and anyone can contribute: mums, dads, aunties uncles and of course children! All you need to do is grab a Whisper Sheet from the school lobby and fill it in with news you feel would be of interest to the school community! Post your completed sheets in the Weekly Whisper box and we'll get them in the next weeks Shuttle!!

A great big thank you to Charlotte Eastwood and Gill Tyler for agreeing to take on the roll of Shuttle producers!

ENTERPRISE PROJECT 2009

Despite the weather the Summer Hoedown was a great success. The Hog roast went down a treat and the band and other attractions were great. Many thanks to the following for your support:

  • TAG - as always you were there to set up, help on the night and tidy up - what would we do without you!?
  • Pennine Lavender for your generous donation of lavender related lovelies! Why not visit their web site to see what other lovelies they sell?  Pennine Lavender
  • The Crystal Palace for the use of the marquee
  • Carolyn Morris from Penistone Fairtrade

MONSTERS AND BEASTS

WHAT A HIT! We had a huge amount of fun in school hunting monsters and investigating mysterious happenings!

The children worked in groups to create body parts which when combined created this monster - we called him Septimus! Here are the 'leg makers' !

The allotment group

We’re really proud to announce that Thurlstone Primary School have recently received a £9,922 Awards for All grant from the National Lottery Fund, for the development of the Community Allotment Project.

The allotment group now consists of pupils, staff, parents and local community members, and meet on a regular basis. The group have worked hard to plan and develop the allotments on the school field and are looking forward to their first harvest of fruit and vegetables.

The aim is to supply the school kitchen, and allotment group members, with fresh, home-grown fruit and vegetables whilst providing hands-on opportunities for children to learn about growing, nature and responsible animal husbandry. It is also the intension to provide group members with the opportunity to be at the heart of a supportive, productive, enthusiastic and ‘green’ collaborative.

We are proud of the work we have done and look forward to spending the Awards for All money on a range of equipment which will enable the project to become sustainable and increasingly productive.

We have made plans to incorporate a poly-tunnel; shed with assorted equipment for both children and adults; easily assessable water and electricity supplies, as well as enclosures for chickens and guinea-pigs.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD

As you may know our very own Mrs Gibbins reached the final three in this regions search to find primary teacher of the year!

She attended the award ceremony at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield and although she didn't win, she did get 'Distinction' (second place!) and is "chuffed to bits". She was presented with a lovely glass trophy which is now located in the school foyer - pop in and have a look (but don't touch as it doesn't half show up finger marks!!!)

The children who attended the ceremony were incredibly well behaved and looked amazing in their Sunday best'.

Here they all are looking all posh!

Fairtrade

FAIRTRADE LOGO

Can you help us achieve Fairtrade school status?

Penistone is a Fairtrade town, so it's only right that it should have Fairtrade schools in it. We have already started to work towards the 5 goals needed to achieve the status.

If you would like to help, or would like to find out more, please contact Mrs Gibbins.

Visit the Fairtrade Foundation web site to find out more:
