Thurlstone Primary School - School Council

Thurlstone Primary School Council Vision statement

Thurlstone Primary School logo

The following is a statement written by Hope Doherty (past pupil) and approved by School Council reps and Mrs Webb, the Head Teacher.

We hope to achieve a safe learning environment and provide an understanding help line for problems and worries in the school community. To contribute to this aim, we give full attention and support towards any pupils who have concerns of any kind.

At our fortnightly meeting, School Council bring up inportant issues such as supporting charities by holding fundraising events.

We constantly set new targets for ourselves and work hard to achieve them.

We ensure also that all children in school have their voice heard by holding regular class council meetings and re-elect School Council members twice a year.

Who are we and how do we work?

We're a group of elected children who represent the whole pupil voice.

We meet regularly to discuss issues which are relevant to our school and the opinions and views of all pupils.

There are two representitives per year group - one boy and one girl.

We have a teacher representative who helps to chair the meetings.

When necessary we keep detailed minutes of each meeting and liase

with the headteacher and other adults in the school community.
All this helps us to develop skills which will enable us to be effective citizens.

LASTED NEWS

We have held recent meeting to discuss how the school council can be involved in the Fairtrade school status project. All reps are keen to be part of the sterring group and will soon be very much involved in our Fairtrade launch which will take place in this years Enterprise week project - watch this space (and check your childs bags and folders) to find out more!

What have we done so far?

Tennis Rackets & Balls

We have done a great deal in the small amount of time we've been active!

The first thing we did was to put in a bid for some much needed fun playground toys.

Mrs Webb gave us the go-ahead and we selected and ordered a range of toys to suit all ages. This went down really well with the rest of the school and we work hard to keep the toys in good condition and used responsibily.

Fruit Cuplets snack

We have also set up Thurlstone's first ever Tuck-shop! A healthy, non- profit making one too! We met with the school meals service to arrange the ordering of stock, and discuss the running of the business. We hadn't realised so much work goes into a Tuck-shop, but it's worth it and good fun.

Dogs Trust logo

We held a fundraising event in February in support of Dogs Trust. We raised over £70 and have used it to sponser Charlie!

Doctors and Nurse Day.

We raised £165! Not bad for a small school!

The money was taken directly to Barnsley Special Care Baby Unit and they are going to spend the money on breast pumps. The staff were very pleased and grateful for the money and have promised to make sure parents and visitors on the ward know what we've done!

PLAYGROUND PARTNERSHIPS

As I'm sure you remember the hard work that went in to our bid - well it was all worth it because we won £5000!

So the playground will soon be transformed into a childs dream play area!!

We're all really proud of our achievement - we even made it, as a main story, on to the front page of the Barnsley Cronicle!

Science Quiz

WE RAISED £368.

Not bad eh!?

We used the money to help purchase the Buddy stop which you can read about on the news page by clicking here. We have also got some fab new picnic benches arriving soon!

Thanks for all your donations and for supporting the quiz!!
